Cosmetic Dentistry – What Do Cosmetic Dentists Do?

Due to the advances in dental technology, cosmetic dentistry is growing in popularity. People who have a functional dental problem or who feel insecure about the appearance of their teeth are turning to cosmetic dentistry. Whether you are looking to better your own appearance or are looking to further your career as a cosmetic dentist, we are here to help you to understand exactly what is involved in cosmetic dentistry.

What is a Cosmetic Dentist?

Cosmetic dentists are just like any other dentist except they focus more on aesthetics. Because many dentists provide dental cosmetic work, The American Dental Association (ADA) does not acknowledge cosmetic dental practice as a separate specialty area. However, a reputable dentist that specializes in cosmetic dentistry has completed formal dental school training in this area. The worlds largest organization for cosmetic dentists, The American Academy of Cosmetic Dentistry (AACD) does provide certification even though the ADA does not recognize it as a specialty area. The AACD’s membership includes dentists from over 70 countries around the world with more than 6,000 professional cosmetic dentists.

What Do Cosmetic Dentists Do?

Cosmetic dentists can perform several procedures such as teeth whitening, straightening with braces or Invisalign, and the application of dental veneers, crowns, bridges, dentures, and implants. While functionality is essential, a cosmetic dentist is primarily concerned about the appearance of the teeth. Most of their work is entirely elective which distinguishes them from a regular dentist.

Sub-Specialties of Cosmetic Dentists

Beyond teeth whitening, cosmetic dentists, focus on these two areas; Orthodontics which straightens teeth, or repositions the teeth and jaw and Prosthodontics which addresses missing teeth by applying artificial replacements. The American Dental Association (ADA) does recognize these two areas within their ten primary specialties.

Patient Cosmetic Dentistry Cost

The costs depend on each individuals situation and can vary drastically. Teeth whitening is usually the simplest and least expensive. Dental veneers can cost $500 + per tooth, dental bonding $100 + per tooth, crowns $500 + per tooth, inlays and onlays $700 + per tooth and an implant procedure can cost anywhere over $1,300.

Insurance companies may or may not cover the cost of cosmetic dentistry. If an individual has a functionality problem there is more of chance insurance will cover, at least a percentage of the cost versus teeth whitening which most often is not covered.

How Many Years of Schooling Do Cosmetic Dentists Do?

An individual interested in dentistry usually starts with a 4-year undergraduate degree majoring in the sciences which include courses in biology and physiology. After the completion of college, the individual goes to a dental school which typically is another four years. If interested in orthodontics or prosthodontics another two years of postgraduate training along with completing a residency program is required.
