Losing all or most of your teeth is a life-changing experience. Suddenly, you are unable to do the things you have always taken for granted — chewing your food, speaking clearly, and smiling without being self-conscious. There is no need to worry. You can replace them with dentures. Good quality dentures are as good as natural teeth. Not only do they look natural, they also allow you to do everything that natural teeth can.

What are dentures?

Dentures are removable artificial teeth and gums that are custom-made to fit perfectly in the wearer’s mouth. They look and work like natural teeth. When you are wearing dentures, people will not know they are not your natural teeth. You can remove them whenever you would like to and put them back on when you need to wear them. If you like to wear them only when eating, then you can do so.

Denture Types

What are the different denture types?

There are two types of dentures: complete (full) and partial.

  • Complete (full) dentures: Full or complete dentures have a complete set of artificial teeth attached to a gum-colored base. You will need to wear these if you have lost all your teeth. Complete dentures come in two types: conventional and immediate. We will make conventional dentures after removing the natural teeth and when the gum tissue is healing. They will be ready for use in eight to 12 weeks. We make immediate dentures while all or most of the teeth are still intact. You can wear them as soon as your teeth have been removed. This means you won’t have to be toothless for even a single day. However, bones and gums tend to shrink while they are healing, which means immediate dentures may not fit perfectly after the gums have healed.
  • Partial dentures: Partial dentures are made for people who still have one or more teeth intact. They consist of two or more replacement teeth attached to a plastic base that is of the same color as the gum tissue, which is often held in place using a framework made of metal. The space left empty by one or more missing teeth is replaced by a fixed bridge. Besides replacing the missing teeth, a partial denture also prevents the remaining natural teeth from moving into the empty space. Partial dentures come in two types: fixed and removable. Fixed partial dentures are also known as a dental implant bridge. They are permanently fixed to the jawbone. Removable partial dentures are secured to the existing teeth with clips or clasps when wearing.

How are dentures made?

Dentures are custom designed and made to fit in your mouth. The process involves the following steps:

  • First, we make a series of impressions of your upper and lower jaw. We measure both jaws to determine how they to relate to one another and how much space they have between them. We then send the impressions and measurements to a dental lab.
  • At the lab, wax forms and plastic models are created using the impressions and measurements. You will be asked to try the models to achieve an exact fit, color, and shape. Once you are satisfied, the final denture is made.

Regardless of the type of dentures, new dentures take a few weeks to get used to. Once you are comfortable with them, you will feel awkward without them. Well-designed dentures look no different from natural teeth.
